SEO in the eyes Google
Being one of the largest search engines on the web, it seems unlikely that you wouldn’t already be doing a least a little bit of optimisation of your website for Google. But, do you actually know what Google are looking for?
Plenty of websites talk about SEO techniques and strategies and most of them are great techniques that they have learnt and discovered through their experiences, and I don’t suggest you ignore their advice. What I do suggest though is also getting some of your advice straight from the horse’s mouth. Yes that’s right Google gives SEO advice.
What SEO Advice Does Google Give
Google has actually got quite a few resources to help guide you through your own website SEO, one their Search Engine Optimization (SEO) page is where they generously give advice on hiring your own search engine optimizer. With tips such as what to look for in an SEO consultant, questions to ask them and what to look out for .
They have a basic explanation from their ‘Google Basics’ page on what Google does to get information from websites (Crawling), storing your websites information (Indexing) and displaying your website in search results (Serving Results). This is a great reference for gaining a better understanding of the whole process, which in turn will help you understand how to rank better.
Also Google provides information for webmasters on their Webmasters Guidelines page, which gives some tips of website design and content layout, some technical guidelines and quality guidelines. They also recommend submitting your website to their URL submission page if it isn’t already indexed, and also submitting your sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools.
On top of this Google also offer a free to download Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide. It covers tips on title tags, meta tags, URL structuring, navigation and more. It is in pdf format so you will need Adobe Reader to open it.
So if you haven’t already, I suggest going through Google’s great resources I’ve mentioned above and start your own SEO strategy on your website as soon as possible.
