Registering a Domain Name
So you’ve decided to delve into the world of online business, you’ve found your niche or already have your business in mind, you’ve done your Market Research and decided on some keywords, and now you’re ready to take the next big step online, Registering a Domain Name. To get you started on your mission to finding the perfect domain name for your business, let me give you a few tips to hopefully make things easier for you.
Where to Get Your Domain Name
Now you could spend forever deciding on which is the best possible domain registrar out there and I would very quickly say you’d be wasting your time, the truth is they all have fairly similar prices and choosing one over the other won’t make your domain name work any better. In my experience though the easiest and most user friendly domain name registrar would have to be GoDaddy, they offer simple solutions to almost anything that’s required for you to get yourself only. As I said though this is only based on my opinion, if find you like just go for it, the most important thing is that you get your domain name registered.
If you do decide to go ahead and use GoDaddy, do a quick search in Google for “GoDaddy Coupon” and you will usually find a good way to save a couple of dollars.
Adding To Your Domain Name Purchase
When going through the domain name registration a lot of the registrar will begin offering all the extras that can go with your domain like all the other available TLD extensions (i.e. .org, .net, .info, etc.). So what do you do in this situation, should you go ahead and buy all the possible extensions out there to stop any one from stealing your website identify. Well this is really up to you, in my opinion unless you truly believed you’ve struck a real gem, I’d put my money to better use.
One thing you should do is register your domain name for the longest period possible, as search engines are able to determine how long a domain name is registered for and will take one with a longer registration more seriously over one with only a short registration period.
Expired Domains and Domain Auctions
Expired Domains and Domain Auctions are your other options when it comes to registering a domain name. For those that are not yet sure what these are, an expired domain is a domain that was previously owned by someone else whom either forgot or didn’t want to renew their registration and is therefore now available to purchase. While a domain auction is where a domain name owner can go if they decide to sell their currently owned domain name in an auction, and thus you can purchase off them.
To help understand the benefits of registering an expired domain read ‘Benefits Of Buying Expired Domain Names’.
There are two popular places online where you can go to either purchase expired domains or begin bidding in domain auctions, they are Freshdrop and Sedo respectively. Although other websites including GoDaddy offer these services, you’ll usually find much higher quality domain names through the above mentioned websites.
The only pitfalls of registering a domain name this way is that they can often cost more, you may not find the domain you’re looking for and the domain name may have a negative reputation attached to them.
